Oscar Movies and Artists reinterpreted
Fashion is an evolving art that makes us curious about design and the subjects wearing them. 1990's fashion was
difficult for fashion because we were looking for our own identity
to define who we wanted to be. We looked for our role models either through Bill Clinton who, for most of us, was the best President that
ever stepped foot in the White House or the music left by Kirk Cobain ( he would have been 45 today ) which we believed broadcasted our message. But both the rocker that spoke our anst of disillusionment also helped established a style that even River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho ( now re-cut by James Franco ) made look good. Now that its 2012, I look back
at the fashion and films I have designed with fond memories ..and it makes me appreciate and love art, design and technology. Without the advancement of film production and photography, we would not have Avatar, the movie. But, lest it be not forgotten that the classic silent films were an important part of evolution and distribution of fashion. Costume Design, Set and Art Departments were handsomely supported because without the stylistic imprints of such Ziegfeld Follies (MGM) and The Great Ziegfeld, we would be bored to death.

This past fashion week showed plenty of cool trends from low slung garments of the 30's-60's that shimmer by Rebecca Minkoff and brights like Betsty Johnson . An elegance of our current Oscar nominated movies this year allowed Costume Designers the ability to out last trends and which may lead seasoned fashion designers to inspiration for the coming seasons. Memorable because for our contemporary silent film "The Artist" lends itself to easy and carefree confident fashion statements of the 30's, and the 60's in "My Week With Marilyn". People like to use to the term Vintage, but all it is - is the re-invention or re-interpreting of something that inspires us to create our opinion. Hence, icons and its fashion cannot be manufactured but technology does its best to capture it better. Kodak and Panavision have taken us to its many stages of shooting. We cannot thank them enough for they set the standard of high quality film and print. So, I thought I would post a few images of my former 90's styling photographed by the utilities of earlier years that only can be said are vintage, using both Polaroids and the large 8"X10" format camera ( don't quote me but think its a Agfa Commercial or Universal )
Here are a few styling works to honor both Oscar nominated movies as I put together a collection of Test shoots with fashion photographers Sean Smith and Nick Knight
I love nothing more than freedom of expression, enjoy....
